is there’s some merit of truth to what fantano is saying here? fantano has been a figure that fans of underground rap have long had polarizing opinions on. some people think he’s “too old” to “get it,” while others maintain their view that fantano is a overall a balanced reviewer and someone with credible opinions he recently posted a tiktok and laid his thoughts on the current underground rap climate out very plainly, with these quotes here. he also used tyler, the creator as an example for his perspective, stating how he believes tyler wouldn’t be able to find success if he was coming up nowadays the underground rap space, largely as a result of social media, is a massively different climate now compared to the early blog era when tyler was coming up. internet culture as a whole is something we’ve largely seen be more quick to label certain things “corny,” and tyler is someone who absolutely didn’t shy away from leaning into that to express himself, especially early on. y’all remember loiter squad, his early antics… it needs no explanation tyler is a perfect example to use imo because there are plenty of artists nowadays who try, but don’t find success in them putting themselves out there plainly, especially if it’s seen as “doing too much.” we’ve seen artists such as che, osamason, slayr dominate the current scene, and fantano is arguing these artists largely exist within the same aesthetic and sonic palette (he has expressed that he enjoys these artists, but this view can coexist with an overall critique of the underground space being “conservative” in its expectation of what is “cool” or “acceptable” from new artists) before social media, you had underground rap artists such as c*nnibal ox, eyedea, aesop rock… artists who did feel like they were wildly different and more confident in their self-expression because social media didn’t exist, and there wasn’t a cultural “mold” to fit into the question is begged - where do we think things go from here? does fantano have a point? what are YOUR thoughts? lmk below <3 — #tylerthecreator #fantano #undergroundrap #osamason #slayr
