Death Cross

The Death Cross and the Golden Cross are two famous technical signals that involve the crossing of two moving averages — most commonly the 50-day and 200-day moving average. A moving average smooths out daily price noise by averaging prices over a set period, giving a clearer view of overall trend direction. When these two averages cross each other, it’s considered a potentially significant signal about where the market is heading.

A Golden Cross occurs when the shorter-term 50-day moving average crosses above the longer-term 200-day moving average — a bullish signal suggesting recent momentum has turned positive and a sustained uptrend may be beginning. Conversely, a Death Cross occurs when the 50-day crosses below the 200-day — a bearish signal suggesting recent performance has deteriorated and a downtrend may be forming. These signals are closely watched by institutional traders and often generate significant media attention, which can itself influence market behavior. It’s worth noting they are lagging indicators — they confirm a trend that’s already underway rather than predicting the future.

Example: Imagine you track two averages of your monthly savings: one over the past 4 months (short-term) and one over the past 16 months (long-term). If your recent 4-month average savings climbs above your 16-month average, that’s a Golden Cross — things are going better lately than they have on average. If your recent average drops below your long-term average, that’s a Death Cross — a warning sign that your financial habits are trending in the wrong direction.
