DeFi Aggregator

A DeFi aggregator is a tool that searches across multiple decentralized exchanges and lending protocols simultaneously to find the best available price, rate, or yield for a user’s request. Instead of manually checking five different DEXes to find who offers the best price for swapping Ether to USDC, you submit your request to an aggregator and it automatically routes your trade through the combination of pools and protocols that delivers the most favorable outcome.

Aggregators work by splitting trades across multiple pools when needed, routing through intermediate tokens when that produces a better effective price, and accounting for the different fee structures of each protocol. The result is that users consistently receive better prices than they would by trading on any single exchange. Well-known aggregators include 1inch, Paraswap, and CowSwap. They do not hold liquidity themselves — they are routing layers on top of the underlying AMMs and order books.

Beyond trading, aggregators also exist for yield — scanning dozens of lending and farming protocols to find the highest safe return for a deposited asset, and automatically moving funds when better opportunities appear. These are sometimes called yield optimizers or vaults (see DeFi Vault). The aggregator category is a key piece of DeFi infrastructure because it compensates for the fragmented landscape of hundreds of protocols, making the ecosystem feel more like a unified market to the end user.

Example: Instead of calling five different airlines to find the cheapest flight from New York to London, you use a travel comparison site that checks them all simultaneously, splits your journey across carriers if that is cheaper, and books the optimal itinerary automatically. The aggregator does not own any planes — it just knows where all the planes are and what they cost.
