Optimistic Rollup

An Optimistic Rollup is a specific type of Layer 2 scaling technology that works by assuming — optimistically — that all transactions submitted to it are valid by default, without immediately verifying every single one. Transactions are bundled together and posted to the Layer 1 in batches. The system only invokes full verification if someone specifically challenges a transaction and claims it is fraudulent.

The mechanism that makes this work is called a “fraud proof.” After a batch of transactions is published to the Layer 1, there is a waiting period — typically around seven days — during which anyone can examine the data and submit a fraud proof if they spot an invalid transaction. If a fraud proof is successfully submitted, the dishonest batch is rolled back and the person who submitted the fraudulent data loses a financial deposit they had staked as a guarantee. The downside of this approach is that the challenge window creates a delay for withdrawals — moving funds from an Optimistic Rollup like Optimism or Arbitrum back to Ethereum mainnet typically takes about a week to finalize. Third-party bridge services can help users bypass this wait for a small fee.

Example: Think of Optimistic Rollups like a community honor system at a library. Rather than checking every borrower’s bag when they leave, the library trusts everyone and only investigates if someone reports a missing book. This makes the day-to-day experience fast and frictionless, but there is a review window — and those caught cheating face consequences.
