A private key is a secret number — typically a very long string of letters and numbers — that proves ownership of a cryptocurrency wallet and authorizes transactions. When you send crypto to someone, your private key is used to create a cryptographic signature that proves you are the rightful owner of the funds, without revealing the key itself. If anyone else obtains your private key, they have complete, unrestricted access to everything in your wallet and can drain it instantly. The blockchain has no password reset, no customer service line, and no way to reverse unauthorized transactions.
A seed phrase (also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic phrase) is a human-readable representation of the same underlying secret. Instead of a string of random characters, it is a list of 12 or 24 ordinary English words in a specific order — something like “apple river thunder mountain vessel…” and so on. These words encode your private key in a form that is easier for humans to write down and store safely. If you lose access to your wallet (your device breaks, you forget your password), your seed phrase is the master key that lets you restore everything. This is why it must be protected with extreme care.
The cardinal rules of crypto security revolve around these two things: never share your private key or seed phrase with anyone, under any circumstances. Never enter them on a website. Never store them in a photo, a cloud file, or an email. Write them on paper and store them somewhere physically secure — or use a dedicated hardware wallet. The phrase “not your keys, not your coins” reflects the fact that if you hold crypto on an exchange rather than in your own wallet, you are trusting that company to hold the keys on your behalf.
Example: Think of your seed phrase like the master key to a safety deposit box that contains all your valuables. The bank does not have a copy — it is the only key in existence. If you lose it, no one can help you get in. If someone else finds it, they can walk right in and take everything. The key cannot be changed or replaced. That is exactly how powerful and how irreplaceable your seed phrase is.
