Proof-of-History (PoH)

Proof of History is a mechanism developed for the Solana blockchain by founder Anatoly Yakovenko. It is not strictly a standalone consensus mechanism — instead, it is a way of creating a verifiable, trustless record of time that makes it possible for validators to agree on the order of events without having to communicate extensively with each other. This dramatically reduces coordination overhead and allows Solana to process transactions much faster than most other blockchains.

The core idea involves a cryptographic function called a Verifiable Delay Function (VDF). Solana’s network runs a continuous chain of hashing computations where each step takes the output of the previous step as its input. Because this process cannot be parallelized, the resulting chain of hashes proves that a specific amount of real time has passed. Transactions and events are embedded into this sequence, permanently timestamping them in a way that is publicly auditable. By giving every event a verifiable timestamp, validators do not need to debate the order in which things happened.

Example: Imagine a court reporter recording testimony in a session. Everything spoken goes onto the tape in the exact order it was said, and the tape cannot be rewound or edited. Proof of History works like that tape — it proves the exact order in which things happened, so no one later needs to argue about the sequence.
