Smart Contract

A smart contract is a program that lives on a blockchain and executes automatically when certain pre-defined conditions are met — with no need for a middleman, a lawyer, or a company to enforce the agreement. The code defines the rules, and those rules run exactly as written, every time, without any human intervention. Once deployed to the blockchain, the contract is permanent and tamper-proof; not even its original creator can change it.

The concept was first articulated by computer scientist Nick Szabo in the 1990s, and Ethereum brought it to life at scale in 2015. A smart contract can govern almost any kind of agreement: automatically releasing payment to a freelancer once a project milestone is verified, swapping one token for another at a predetermined rate, issuing a loan when collateral is deposited, or distributing royalties to artists every time their NFT is resold. It’s worth understanding, though, that smart contracts execute exactly what the code says — not necessarily what the author intended. A bug in a smart contract can be exploited, and because the contract is immutable, fixing errors after deployment is often impossible without complex workarounds.

Example: Think of a smart contract like a vending machine. You select your item, insert the exact amount, and the machine automatically dispenses the product and returns any change. There is no cashier involved, no trust required, and no room for anyone to pocket extra money — the logic is built into the machine itself. The vending machine executes the transaction exactly as designed, every single time.
