State Channel
DeFiA state channel is a way to make transactions faster and cheaper by moving them off the main blockchain. Participants can conduct many transactions between themselves without adding each one to the blockchain. Once they're done, they can send just the final result back to the main blockchain.
A state channel is a technique for conducting many transactions off-chain between two or more parties, with only the opening and closing of the channel recorded on the main blockchain. Inside the channel, participants exchange signed messages back and forth — each representing an updated state of their shared balance — without broadcasting anything to the network. When they are finished, they submit the final agreed state to the blockchain and it settles as a single transaction.
The motivation is speed and cost. Every on-chain transaction on Ethereum or Bitcoin takes time to confirm and costs a fee. If you and a friend want to send each other payments a thousand times — perhaps in a gaming application or a streaming micropayment system — doing that on-chain would be slow and expensive. A state channel lets you do all thousand exchanges in milliseconds with no fees, then close out with one final settlement on-chain.
The security model relies on the fact that either party can submit the last valid signed state to the blockchain at any time to force a settlement. This means a party cannot cheat by pretending the final balance is different from reality — the other side can always produce the most recent signed message as proof. State channels underpin the Bitcoin Lightning Network, which enables fast and cheap Bitcoin payments, and were explored extensively in early Ethereum scaling research. They work best for relationships between known parties who transact frequently, and less well for one-off transactions with strangers.
Example: Two roommates open a tab at their favorite bar. During the evening they buy each other rounds back and forth, but the bartender only records the final tally at closing time, not every individual drink. The running tab on a napkin between them is the state channel — constantly updated, trusted because both signed off on it, and only settled once at the end of the night.
